What to Expect at Your First Kink Munch

Attending your first kink munch can be incredibly intimidating. The word "kink" often conjures up images of dungeons and intense play, but a "munch" is quite the opposite. It's a casual, low-pressure social gathering—usually at a restaurant or pub—where people in the lifestyle meet up in "vanilla" (everyday) clothing to socialize.

It's Just a Social Mixer

There is absolutely no play at a munch. It's just a group of people sitting around eating, drinking, and chatting. It's the safest and most recommended way to vet the local community, meet potential play partners or mentors, and learn about local events in a public setting.

In-Person Safety Basics

Even though munches are public, standard safety rules apply. Don't feel pressured to give out your real name, phone number, or where you work. Using a "scene name" is perfectly normal and expected. Have an exit strategy if you feel overwhelmed, and always let a vanilla friend know where you are.

You Don't Need to Know Everything

It's completely fine to say, "I'm new and just here to learn." The community is generally very welcoming to newcomers. If someone asks you a question you aren't comfortable answering, "I'm not sure yet" or "I prefer not to discuss that" are complete and respected sentences.

Dress Comfortably

Leave the leather and latex at home! Munches are strictly "vanilla-dressed" events to respect the public venue hosting them. Jeans and a t-shirt are perfectly fine. Focus on being comfortable and engaging in good conversation as you take your first steps into the community.
